This beautiful ride sits within the famous Salzkammergut region only a short distance from Salzburg. A spectacular region of alpine and subalpine lakes, picturesque valleys and steep mountains. The region offers isolated areas to swim or just sit at one of the lakes shores or along the riding paths that we have put together for you and your group. The soaring mountains in every direction provide diversity in our rides as well as fantastic views of this magnificent region. The villages and surrounds of Mondsee and St Gilgen all played their part in the scenery or backdrop of the Sound of Music, testament to the beauty of this area.
Day 1 – We suggest that you arrive at Bad Ischl the previous day allowing time to enjoy this lovely village that was once the summer residence of emperors. Alternatively, an early morning bus from Salzburg train station will provide you time to drop off your luggage and pick up you bike for the ride to Hallstatt. Hallstatt is one of the more famous villages in the area not only due to its historical significance (i.e the iron age and salt mines) but it is quoted as being the most picturesque village in the world. Google it and you will see why (24km)
Day 2 – Todays ride takes us back along Hallstaetter See (Lake Hallstatt) as we continue to circumnavigate this beautiful lake and then along the shores of Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang) to St Gilgen. Wonder around this beautiful historic and quaint Austrian village. You can also take the Zwolferhorn (1,522 metres high) cable car and enjoy the most wonderful views of this beautiful region. You will quickly see why this region and many parts of St Gilgen were used in the filming of The Sound of Music. Worth noting – Mozart’s Mother, Anne Maria, was born here. (44Km)
Day 3 – The beautiful little village of Mondsee is your destination today. The famous Cathedral was part of the wedding scene between Maria and the Baron in The Sound of Music. Mondsee is also the best place to sit and enjoy some of the best apple strudel you will ever taste. (16Km)
Day 4 – Still some time to enjoy Mondsee before making your own way back to Salzburg. Although Salzburg is one of the larger towns in the area the historical centre provides plenty of wondering time. Visit Mozart’s house or catch the funicular to the famous Hohensalzburg Fortress, which looks over Salzburg and provides the world-famous Salzburg silhouette, dating back to the 11th century.
