The island that sits within Lake Bled, Slovenia is that picture that everybody has seen but not quite sure where it is. Well this self-guided walking tour will give you the experience to become familiar with that famous photo as well as the other wonders that surround the town of Bled.
You also get to explore Lake Bohinj which is not far from Lake Bled. Some say this lake is as beautiful as Lake Bled but without the tourists. We also thought we should add a little mountain hike in between your lake visits to see the lakes from above.
Day 1 – Arrive Lake Bled
On arrival to Bled which sits on the famous Lake of the same name you will be amazed by the beautiful views around this lake. That’s why you have a full day here tomorrow to explore. Today you should have time to take one of the traditional wooden boats – pletnas – which have been taking visitors to the island in the middle of the lake for centuries. These boats are operated by standing rowers known as pletnars. After landing, guests climb 99 stone steps to reach the Assumption of Mary Church. On this island, which is the subject of legendary tales, listen to the church bell and ring it yourself. Legend has it that this will make your wishes come true.
Day 2 – Lake Bled
An essential free day in Bled due to what this tourist village has to offer, but a walk around the lake provides a warm up for the next days.
If you missed the tiny, tear-shaped Bled Island yesterday then it beckons from the shore, today. On the walk around the lake you can also find self-rowing boats to go to the island as an alternative to using plenars.
Well worth the visit is Bled Castle, perched atop a steep cliff more than 100m above the lake, Bled Castle is how most people imagine a medieval fortress to be, with towers, ramparts, moats and a terrace offering magnificent views. The castle houses a museum collection that traces the lake’s history from earliest times to the development of Bled as a resort in the 19th century.
Bled also offers excellent culinary delights. The most famous delicacy being the Bled Cream Cake (“kremšnita”) made using an original recipe from over 60 years ago.
Day 3 – Lake Bled – Vintgar Gourge
A fantastic walk is on the agenda for today, we walk from Bled to the top of Vintgar Gorge then walk back through the gorge with its wooden bridges and viewing galleries that leads you down the 1.6 km long gorge. Picture perfect waterfalls, pools, and cascades await. At the base of the gorge you can rest whilst tasting a trout lunch or dinner straight from the water you have been walking along.
Day 4 – Pokljuka – Debela Peč
Today gets a little bit more serious and you will be transferred from your Bled accommodation to the start of today’s experience. The hike to the peak of Debela Peč takes you to one of the most panoramic peaks in the Julian Alps. With step walls on the north side and moderate grassy slopes this walk is diverse and beautiful. A full panoramic view awaits, with good visibility you can see Lakes Bled and Bohinj, the Julian Alps, Karavanken Alps bordering Austria and south towards the Ljubljana plain. This is a truly breathtaking walk.
A mountain hut provides well needed refreshments and the walk back to your accommodation will pass through some traditional Slovenian high farm buildings and forests.
Day 5 – Lake Bohinj
Environmental focus is strong in Slovenia and that’s why we have to move our own luggage today. A free bus will pick us up from our hotel and take us to Lake Bohinj – this initiative has been implemented to reduce vehicle numbers in the mountains.
After dropping off your gear at tonight’s accommodation you then walk up the Voje valley to Slap Mostnice (waterfall)
The crystal clear Mostnica stream has carved a 2-kilometer picturesque gorge. At some points the stream bed is extremely narrow and the gorges are up to 20 meters high. The upper part of Mostnica the valley widens. This is the idyllic valley of Voje with splendid meadows and (mostly) holiday houses. The pretty Voje water fall completes the walk, but you get to walk back through the valley/gorge on the opposite side to enjoy the many varied views.
Overnight: Ribčev Laz on Lake Bohinj
Day 6 – Lake Bohinj
A varied day ahead us you today. A walk along one side of Lake Bohinj then onto Slap Savica (waterfall). On the return walk you can take the Cable car to Vogel Ski resort/restaurant, with some amazing views of the valley. Then it’s back down for a tranquil ferry ride on Lake Bohinj back to Ribčev Laz.
